Why Kpop Girl Idols Put Towels on Their Laps When Sitting at TV Shows

I don’t know if it drew your attention too, but when Kpop Girl Groups sit down at concerts or shows, they are immediately given a veil or a towel to put on their laps and sit that way. I was very interested when I first saw this.

There are at least three main reasons for this practice. First one; these covers are given because girls cannot be comfortable with short dresses when they sit on the stage.  On the other hand,  the cameramen of Korean TVs are insane for they constantly change camara angles. While the girls dance, you get dizzy from the camera movement. Those cameras whirling during the dance do not stop when the girls sit down, and they start to focus on idols. Thanks to the covers, there is no concern for the girls due to these abrupt camera movements, and they just sit more comfortably without the risk of being over-exposed!

The second reason is actually related to manners and Korean norms. Covering the legs with a veil while sitting is also seen as a sign of respect in Korea. In this sense, kpop artists who cover their legs while sitting show respect to the audience.

The third reason is to be protected from the cold. The studio environment or the stadiums where award ceremonies are held can be quite cool when standing still. Considering the heat of the spotlights hitting the stage while they are on the stage and the warming of the body due to movement, the studio environments are kept cool. In this sense, these little blankets keep their legs warm while they sit. In this respect, it also has a functional aspect.

Blankets, veils or towels can be seen on all girl groups. The following examples can be increased in number:

BLACKPINK :

TWICE:

MAMAMOO:
