Korean Parliament Discusses “BTS Military Service Law Amendment”

BTS-Askerlik

The Korean Parliament received pre-approval and a proposal of a very important law amendment from Defense Commission, which is Parliament’s own sub-unit dealing with legislation regarding military services.  If the proposed law is accepted in the General Assembly of the Parliament, there will be an important development regarding the military service requirements of both the BTS members and other artists who are as successful as them in representing Korea. Details are in our article.

The draft law amendment passed by the Korean Parliament’s Defense Commission stipulates that the Korean Military Services Law will be changed in a way that an option of postponing military service will be provided for musicians and artists who make an outstanding contribution to the promotion of the country’s culture. This was a right only available for athletes who had previously excelled in the Olympics.

What is interesting is the name given to this draft amendment: “BTS Military Service Bill“. BTS is everywhere now!

According to the draft law amendment, those who receive a state medal or a medal of outstanding service from the head of state will be evaluated in this status. As we know, BTS had already received an award in this context two years ago.

So what does the law bring specifically to the table: It allows to postpone military service until the age of 30!

Let’s say this law passed by the plenary session of the Korean Parliament. In this case, Jin, born on December 4, 1992, will have the chance to postpone her military service until December 4, 2022!

Let’s see if the draft bill, which seems to be regarded favorably both by the government and the opposition party, would turn into law or not.
